"Sing Merry Christmas" to be released for World AIDS Day

HAMILTON, ON, Nov. 28 /CNW/ - On Sunday, November 16, Hamilton
musicians and artists launched the Christmas holiday season early, recording
a new Christmas song to support local and international AIDS efforts. Written
byJeffrey C. Martin, singer/songwriter for new folk-rock group The Caretakers,
the song is being produced by Glen Marshall and Michael Keire of Hamilton's
Vibewrangler Recording Studio. Local musicians including The Mississippi
Kings, Tom Wilson, Mike McCurlie and Jesse Lewis have contributed to this
Christmas fundraising initiative.
Sing Merry Christmas will be released on Monday, December 1st - World AIDS Day
- and will be available for free to download atwww.singmerrychristmas.com. "When
people go to the website to download theMP3, they have the choice of making a donation
in whatever amount they wish inthe spirit of goodwill," says Martin. "During this Christmas season, peoplewill have the choice of donating to the (Hamilton) AIDS Network and/or the Stephen Lewis Foundation. They'll be helping children and families not only in the Hamilton area who are simply trying to hang on to life, one challenging and often frightening day at a time, but also the millions of orphans andwomen suffering from AIDS in Africa."
In order for this Christmas song to sustain some long-term fundraising
capacity, Martin (composer), Marshall and Keire (producers) have agreed to
direct all future publishing royalties to the Stephen Lewis Foundation
indefinitely. "We want to make an official presentation once a date and time
can be arranged with the Foundation," says Martin. "Every time this song is
played on radio, Internet or performed publicly, royalties will accrue and go
to support the Foundation."
"I think every songwriter would like to pen a song for Christmas that has
the potential to become a holiday favourite," says producer Glen Marshall. "I
think Jeff has done it with Sing Merry Christmas. We all liked it the first
time we heard the demo. It's a song about hope, goodwill and the true spirit
of Christmas. But more important, the song will lend a hand to a cause that is
in great need of help."
Organizations like the AIDS Network work to recognize and respond to the
stigma and challenges posed by HIV/AIDS on individuals and communities through
education and support. "But we don't do it alone," says Adrian Betts, interim
executive director. "Events like SingMerryChristmas.com are crucial. It's a
wonderful way to bring the AIDS prevention message to a broad cross section of
the public in a non-confrontational manner. We're extremely grateful to
organizer Jeff Martin for including the AIDS Network and the Stephen Lewis
Foundation in his holiday gift list. Thanks to his hard work, and the talent
of all the generous musicians and producers, every person who makes a donation
for this song over the holiday season will be making a very real contribution
to the fight against AIDS, here at home and around the world."
The statistics about AIDS are mind-boggling says Martin. "There are 40
million people infected with the HIV virus around the world, 28 million of
them in sub-Saharan Africa, of which nearly two thirds are women - and more
than 11 million children have been orphaned by AIDS. Since the beginning of
the epidemic more than 15 million Africans have died from AIDS. This 20th
century plague has caused immense human suffering everywhere."
"Christmas is supposed to be that time of year filled with joy and
happiness, but too many people don't even have the necessities of life, like
shelter, food and basic healthcare," says Lena Smye, lead vocalist with The
Caretakers. "We take much for granted today and get so hung up on our own
problems that are relatively small stuff compared to what the majority of
people on this planet, particularly children, are facing every day. So this is
one small way of helping those in both our local and global community who
desperately need it."
The coalition of Hamilton musicians and supporters are hoping that at the
very least, local businesses and organizations will promote the Sing MerryChristmas URL - www.singmerrychristmas.com - to their employees, suppliers and peers. "Our only goal is to offer people a new sing-along Christmas song that they can play this season and many more," says Marshall. "But most
importantly, we want to encourage people to help us rid the scourge of AIDS
everywhere, especially from our developing world in exchange for this song.
The first part is easy, the second part will define the extent of our humanity."

CMJ Review of Sisters 3

Neil Young Puts out a plan for Saving the Big 3

How To Save A Major Automobile Company

Find a new ownership group. The culture must change. It is time to turn the page. In the high technology sector there are several candidates for ownership of a major car and truck manufacturer. We need forward looking people who are not restricted by the existing culture in Detroit. We need visionary people now with business sense to create automobiles that do not contribute to global warming.

Vibewrangler Sessions in New York With World Music All Stars

Vibewrangler producer Glen Marshall just returned from a week of recording sessions in NYC with cellist and ex patriot Rufus Cappadocia and Haitian percussionist and performer Bonga Gaston Jean Baptist.

Marshall has been working on the follow up to Rufus' critically acclaimed solo album "Songs for cello", an album that has really opened up doors internationally for the New York based Cappadocia.

The album was originally signed to NY's Velour label, who in turn helped have the album signed the to the prestigious Daqui label, which is the Imprint label for the Nuit Atypiques Festival in France and distributed world wide by the respected prestige distributor and label Harmonium Mundi. The "Daqui" Label which means literally "from here" is known to feature some of the worlds rarest and beautiful musical cultural treasures.

Also collaborating with Cappadocia is Haitian born percussionist and performer Bonga Gaston Jean-Baptist. Marshall also co-produced Ayiti Afrika with Bonga's group The Vodou Drums of Haiti. Bonga has been featured on tracks and performed with Wyclef Jean and Grace Jones to name a few.

Also cutting tracks at the session was Cameroonian born singer Kaissa who divides her time between her own career and backing up performers as diverse as Salif Keita, Cesaria Evora , Diana Ross, and is preparing for a fall tour with David Byrne.

Vishal Vaids' Ghazal Innovations

Ghazal is a Persian song form literally meaning “to hold conversation with the divine,” and VISHAL VAID is undoubtedly one of the genre's young masters. Since his first live concert was at age three, Vishal has raised passion and fury in global audiences with the sound of his unforgettable voice. Pliant in many styles, from classical concerts sung in Urdu and Hindi to fusion experiments with Moroccan Gnawa and electronic renderings, his voice is the ecstatic infusion of diverse sounds. The man behind Karsh Kale's three records, he has performed alongside Bill Laswell, Hassan Hakmoun, Talvin Singh and Alex Kirschner. Spurred by the timeless qawwali sounds Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan exposed the West to, Vishal is poised to start his own re-evolution. “The ghazal is another art form I’m just waiting to reinvent," he says. "I feel it coming out of world instrumentation; be it an Arabic violin, an Italian cellist, a saxophone, what have you. These are all different concepts you have to be open to.

LP out February 12th, 2008 on Velour Music Group

Meet cellist Rufus Cappadocia, a multi-lingual musician, performer, composer and recording artist of incredible range and diversity. From the modalities of Middle Eastern, West African and pan-European folk forms to blues, rock and jazz along the way, adding elements American roots, Mediterranean textures, and Caribbean percussion for good measure, Cappadocia’s effortless and natural embrace of all music is awe-inspiring.

Cappadocia is both a musical maverick and one of the leading voices of cutting edge cello today. After years of experimentation and creative revision, Rufus plays a self-designed five-string electric cello that extends the bass range of the cello down to 41 hz, and through amplification expands its tonal possibilities, creating new sounds by what was once known only as a classical music instrument.

“I’ve studied a lot of different musical vocabularies,” Rufus Cappadocia explains. “And I’ve played with musicians literally from around the world. But, in the end, music all comes down to a single source. You can be pulled this way or that, but essentially it all converges on the same location. Every doorway leads back to one place,” adding with a laugh, “I guess you could say my whole life has been an attempt at getting to that place.”

New York Newsday hailed a Town Hall performance by Rufus (at the Black Rock Coalition’s Tribute to Hendrix Concert) as “the evening’s most mesmerizing moment,” and Rufus has made a career of going where few cellists have gone before, appearing on CD’s with Ross Daly, Kif with David Fiuczynski, DJ Cheb i Sabbah, Esma, The Paradox Trio, Odetta, Michael Blake, and Tamalalou, among others. Rufus has also performed with Kasse Mady, Aretha Franklin, The Black Rock Coalition, Theodossi Spassoff, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Michael Hill, Vernon Reid, and Bethany Yarrow.

Vibewrangler Records the Original Puff's Daddy

Vibewrangler Producer Glen Marshall has just returned from a recording session in NYC with Folk Legend Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul and Mary fame. Peter is hard at work on a follow up to the 2007 collaboration with his daughter Bethany and
and Canadian Expatriate Rufus Cappadocia which has sold over 500,ooo copies. The new album has Peter revisiting folk standards with long time friends and fellow musicians Dick Kniss and Paul Prestopino.

"Working with Peter one has to really be on their toes". cites Marshall. "He's got an incredible ear and musical intuition." "He knows when to listen to input and when he has to go it alone. He's a very heroic figure." " I feel honored to work with such a
huge talent". "Peter is a perfectionist and really knows his way around a mixing board, he hears everything...he's truly an amazing person."

Dick Kniss and Paul Prestopino are perhaps best known as the fourth and fifth members of the legendary folk group Peter, Paul and Mary. Dick has been the group's bassist since their 1962 beginnings and still plays for their reunion concerts. When Peter, Paul and Mary stopped touring regularly in the '70s he became bassist for John Denver, with whom he co-authored classics like "Sunshine On My Shoulder." Over the years Dick has performed with such jazz greats as Woody Herman, Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd, Pepper Adams and Zoot Sims.

Paul Prestopino is a multi-instrumentalist, skilled on guitar, banjo, mandolin, Dobro and harmonica. Beginning in 1961 he was accompanist for the Chad Mitchell Trio and has performed on stage and on recordings with such diverse performers as Tom Paxton, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Bela Fleck, Laura Nyro, Livingston Taylor, John Denver and Aerosmith. As a recording engineer Paul has contributed to the "Concert for Bangladesh" and "No Nukes" albums.
